2022 Handicap Pairs Championship Final

This was a great final between the best two Handicap Pairs teams for 2022. We had a previous winner of this popular event, Glenn Simington playing with Grant Ambrose Vs 'new kids on the block' Peter Benfield in his first UBMBC Championship playing with fellow Championship rookie, Martin O'Malley, on a very tricky rink.

Peter & Martin got out to an early lead, Grant & Simo came back, but Peter & Martin held their nerve and hung onto win the UBMBC 2022 Handicap Pairs Championship.

2022 Veteran Singles Championship

 

Allan Rhodes and Peter Springett played in the Final of the 2022 Veteran Singles Championship. The gusty wind was very strong and made standing on the mat very hard. It was impossible to control the bowl consistently. Despite that, there were some great bowls played and the game came down to a nail biting finish.

Congratulations to Allan on drawing the winning shot on his less fancied hand, to sneak inside the shot bowl, to win the Championship 21 - 19.

Barry & George came back, but Terry & Peter kept their noses in front for the entire game. There were some great bowls played and a few of those 'others', on a tricky green, in blustery conditions.

Despite the weather forecasters warning us of severe rain and possible floods, we had hot sun and wind all day....no rain at all. The windy conditions made is pretty tricky, but we managed to get all four games in.

The results were are as follows:

1st place Ian Jarratt, Gwen Jarratt & Mitch Douglas (Umina) with 4 wins +34.

2nd place Pat Thornton, Shane Reeves & Peter Bowler (Entrance) with 3.5 wins + 22.

3rd place Wayne Balfe, Tammy Homan & Tony Miller (Composite) with 3 wins + 18.

4th place Heather Danford, Terry Pappas & Philip Westcott (Composite) with 3 wins + 10.

5th place Robin Brown, Mark Brown & Steve Balsdon (Composite) with 2 wins + 9.

6th place Kaye Cavenagh, Peter Springett & Shane Waddell (Umina) with 2 wins + 2.

Congratulations to Mitch and the Jarratts on a great win, great to see Peter Bowler and his team from the Entrance and congratulations to Heather Danford, who came all the way from Hawaii to play in her first game in Australia and went away with some money....she told me that her skip let the side down!!!

2022 Mixed Fours Championship Final

 

What a great Final this was. The Tony Potter led side got out to a very comfortable 18 - 4 lead after 13 ends. It looked like they were coasting. I think I saw Barry Gilmour go to the TAB and 'put the money on'!! Barry's side then won 7 of the next 8 ends, which included a 4 and 2x 3s. With the end that Harry's side won (18th end), they were 4 shots down and Simo was able to disturb the head with his last bowl, to go from 4 shots down, to 1 shot up and then Harry added another shot to make it 2 shots. As it turned out, Simo's on-shot was the match winning bowl (in my opinion). Barry's side were holding 4 shots on the last end, which made the score 20 - 19 and Harry (quite rightly) decided not to play his last bowl, which gave Harry's Heros the 2022 Mixed Fours Championship. Congratulations to all players on a sensational game and a special congratulations to Steph Heard on winning her very first championship.

The UBMBC 2022 King & Queen of the Central Coast Carnival has been completed, in another day of sunshine, with a nice bit of breeze. Despite having several high profile teams from other clubs, the UBMBC/UBWBC teams did very well. Here are the results from the 2 day, 7 game carnival:

 The game see sawed throughout, until Upu & Grant strug a few ends together towards the end of the game, which resulted in Phil & David having to play 'catch up' and go for shots that they probably wouldn't have gone for earlier on in the game. The final score (21 - 14) does not reflect how close this game really was. Congratulations to Upu & Grant on taking out the UBMBC 2022 Minor Pairs Championship and very well done to Phil & David for making the final.

2022 Minor Singles Championship Final

 

The Final of the UBMBC 2022 Minor Singles Championship was played at Club Umina this afternoon (Saturday 25thJune 2022), on a pretty slick green, on a beautiful, sunny Winters afternoon.

The Final was between Grant Watson and Kevin Bettridge, who both played some great draw bowls. Grant was the more consistent bowler on the day, which he converted into his Minor Singles Championship title.

Congratulations to Kevin on taking some big scalps on his way through to the Final and Congratulations to Grant on winning the title.

2021 Veterans Final

Roger Twells, Jim Phillips, Stewart Duncan & Ross McIntyre.

Not to mention Covid lock downs and weeks of rain and player unavailability, the Final of the UBMBC 2021 Veteran Pairs was played in glorious conditions today (23/4/2022). 

Ross & Stewart got out to a handy 7 - 0 lead and were drawing very well. Roger & Jim steadied their nerves and gradually got into the game. This proved to be a marathon of a game, running for over 4 hours. It was a sensational, high quality final, with Jim and Roger holding just a 3 shot lead going into the last end. Roger & Jim eventually winning by 17 - 15....

Veterans Singles 2021 Final

After several postponements due to rain, the Final of the UBMBC 2021 Veteran Singles was played yesterday (14/4/2022).

Rex got away to a 7 - 0 start, but Ross caught up and passed Rex by 3 or 4 shots.

It was a very tight game for some more ends, before Rex took a slight lead. At 22 all, Rex got a 1 then a surprised 2 to win. Great game by both players....congratulations to Rex A E Hunt on a great campaign.

UBMBC 2022 Major Singles Championship Final

The Final of the UBMBC 2022 Major Singles Championship was played this afternoon (13/3/2022). After a three day break from all of the rain, we had a shower at the start of play, which delayed the game by 15 minutes.

Despite the rain and the green slowing down a bit, Shane and Jim played great draw bowls, throughout the game. Jim was a bit slow getting off the mark, but found his length to make this a great contest.

The game was closer than the final score suggests, but credit to both players. Congratulations to Jim Phillips on making his first Major Singles Final and even bigger Congratulations to Shane Waddell, who played in his third final in three years, including winning back to back UBMBC Major Singles Championships.

2021 Minor Pairs Final (16/01/2022)

The Final of the Umina Beach 2021 Minor Pairs was played at Club Umina this afternoon, between the unbackable favourites Tom Burgmann & Lee Cribbs against the 'Mighty Mites' Ian Jarratt & Victor Gauci.

Ian & Vic got out to an early 8 - 0 lead, before Tom & Lee recovered to get back into the game. There were some great bowls played on quite a quick green, with a gentle breeze. Each team picked up 1 and 2 shots, but Ian & Vic maintained their lead throughout the game and only went behind on one end. Tom & Lee held in there and kept digging away, but dropped 4 shots near the end of the game and were playing catch up after that.

Ian Jarratt & Vic Gauci eventually winning this tight contest 19 - 16. Congratulations to all four players...
