60 Years Old and Going Strong

In June, 1957 the foundations for a club to be known as the UMINA BEACH BOWLING AND RECREATION CLUB were laid. The interested members gathered funds and sought a section of land in Melbourne Ave, from Gosford Council with £300 (pound) in hand, the task of clearing the land was given to a plant operator, who took £250 (pound) from the kitty, leaving £50 (pound) to commence operations. The No. 1 green was sited, and the 40 x 20 clubhouse was set behind it, and it was here that the volunteers and the "professionals" began to get the building up from ground level. The first President was Arthur Wolfe, who's term of office extended from 1957 to 1961. The Ladies began in November 1959, with 17 members at its augural meeting. In 2006 the club found itself in financial difficulties, and merged with Merrylands RSL.
In 2017 Umina Beach Men’s B.C. turns 60 years old. Everyone is welcome to join them and help celebrate during Kingfisher Week from 17th—22nd July.

New Hav'A Go Pairs Champions

Umina’s Peter Springett teamed up with his next door neighbor Sterling Young to take out the honors in the four way round robin final of “Hav’ago Pairs” played at Bateau Bay BC on Friday evening 24th March under lights.
It was the third attempt to stage the final with wet weather causing two previous postponements of the final and play finally getting underway in light drizzle just to remind players the weather gods were still taking a keen interest in the final.
The round robin final was contested between the four winning teams that had won their respective catchment final playing each other in three rounds of five ends, with the non registered lead playing three bowls and the registered skip restricted to two bowls.
Despite their inexperience, there were some top bowls played with Sean Middleton and Wyong’s Pat O’Neil stumbling in their last game to become the runners-up with Robert Scott and Everglade’s Noel Gray third and Matt Olie and Davistown’s Mike Fletcher a commendable fourth.
Despite getting a little damp thel finalists shared a prize pool of $1,000, with Umina’s Peter Springett & Sterling Young sharing $400 first prize and Wyong’s Pat O’Neal & Sean Middleton splitting the runners-up spoils of $300. Third place took home $200 and fourth a handy $100.

Jock & Lee go out with a WIN!

The final of the mixed fours proved to be one of the highlights of the year with the game going down to the wire on the last end. “Jock” Young’s team of Lee Morley, Corinne Dixon, Jeff Dixon beating the experienced team of Elaine Finlayson, Leanne Chenoweth, Shane Starkey and Mal Dodd’s 18-16 on the last end. The game had the spectators on the edge of their seats for the game. Well done. Unfortunately Jock and Lee are leaving for greener pastures around Grafton and we wish them well in their new adventure.

Rookie Captures Unique Double

Umina’s Shane Starkey, a bowler of just two years experience, has captured two Central Coast titles in just a week apart.
Firstly, he won the Rookie Pairs with club mate Glen Simington and on Sunday 25th September he won the prestige Champion of Club Champion Pairs with partner Peter O’Sullivan by defeating the accomplished Toukley District pair of Eric Henricksen and Barrie McFetters.
For Shane it’s a dream come true as the Zone Match Committee did not see it coming as they had both events scheduled for the same weekend, not expecting a Rookie to qualify in the Champion of Club Champion Pairs which is usually contested by the most experienced of bowlers.
These two outstanding wins will see Glen and Shane travelling to Raymond Terrace on the 8th October and Peter and Shane off to The Rules BC Wagga Wagga from 21-24 November to contest the State Final Series of both events.
They can rest assured they will have all Central Coast bowlers behind them in their endeavors to complete the ultimate dream of winning a State title.

Steady Drizzle Failed to Deter Rookies in Pairs Final

Steady drizzle failed to deter Umina’s Glenn Simington / Shane Starkey and Halekulani’s Brendan Wrice / Graham Bates in the final of the Central Coast division of the Bowls NSW Rookies Pairs for those bowlers with less than thirty months playing experience.
Played at Umina Beach BC on Sunday 18th September both teams played top quality draw bowls under damp and adverse conditions.
The Umina Beach duo jumped away to a handy early lead of 7-2 in the short 12 end final but the Halekulani pair fought back as the rain got heavier but the local lads of Glenn Simington and Shane Starkey held their cool to run out winners 9-6.
Glenn and Shane will now go to Raymond Terace BC on Saturday 8th October to play off in the State Final Series.
The Scoreboard tells the tale of the final of the final of the Rookie Pairs won by Umina’s Glenn Simington &, Shane Starkey over Hali’s Graham Bates & Brendan Wrice
